Yes, The Last Kingdom is largely based on real-life events and characters. First and foremost, The Last Kingdom is based on the above-mentioned Saxon Stories literary series by Cornwell. Though several of the events ad characters featured in the series are based on real happenings. Alfred the Great, for instance, did exist as the King of Wessex from 871 to 899 and his spouse, Aelswith, is another character based on truth, as the couple wedded in the year 868.
The revolt of Aethelwold against Alfred was also based on real-life history and Lord Aethelred was also the leader of Merica between 881 to 911, alongside Lady Aethelflaed in Anglo-Saxon history. One character who is fictional, though is the lead on the show, Uhtred of Bebbanburg. With only his name and territory taking inspiration from the descendant of author Cornwell, Uhtred the Bold lived as the Earl of Northumbria and ruler of Bamburgh Castle in the 10th century. Uhtred the Bold did not lead a similar life to a fictional character in the show.
Seven Kings Must Die
The 5th season of the series will be getting a feature-length follow-up film titled Seven Kings Must Die, serving as a stand-alone project to come to a conclusion to the arc of Uhtred. Arnas Fedaravicius and Alexander Dreymon are both asserted to be coming back as Sihtric and Uhtred after the former uploaded a video of the pair on set. Mark Rowley is also hearsay to be returning as Finan. A release date is still to be ready with filming starting in the month of January 2022, but we are expecting its release to be early in the year 2023.
