For nearly nine months in 1996, López filmed video diaries obsessing over the singer and discussing various topics from his apartment in Hollywood, Florida.

On September 12, 1996, López sent a sulfuric acid letter bomb to Björk’s home in London. He recorded a final video explaining his motives and ended by filming his su*cide.

Four days later, Hollywood police discovered his body and the tapes, alerting Scotland Yard, who intercepted the bomb at a London postal facility.

The device was safely detonated, and Björk remained unharmed.

The Story of Bjork Stalker ( Ricardo López)

Here’s The man who became known as the “Björk Stalker” for his unhealthy obsession with his idol.

Björk Guðmundsdóttir is a highly talented Icelandic singer who has been part of various rock bands, but her solo career is best acclaimed for her 10 studio albums.

She has amassed many fans over the years, with her first solo album, the renowned “Debut,” released in 1993. Unfortunately, during this time, she attracted an unusual admirer, the Uruguayan Ricardo López.

Ricardo López was born on January 14, 1975, in Montevideo, Uruguay. As a child, he moved to the United States, which nurtured his passion for Hollywood. He dreamed of becoming an actor, but his limited financial means led him to abandon this aspiration.

After his dream was shattered, Ricardo began working with his brother in a pest control company in Hollywood. He was very reclusive and started writing a diary (totalling 803 pages) filled with hatred towards society and a great love for the Icelandic artist.

This “love” quickly turned into hatred when Björk entered a relationship. At 21, Ricardo purchased a camcorder, replacing his written diary.

In the videos, the stalker expressed all his hatred towards Goldie and Björk, but mainly towards the DJ who was dating the singer.

Despite being of Latin descent, Ricardo attacked Goldie with racist comments about her mixed-race features and believed he was a better option for Björk.

In one of the videos, Ricardo shows an image of Björk while saying, “Look at this beautiful face. This delicate, innocent, childlike thing. She’s having fun with a black man. Can you believe this? This is unacceptable.”

In one of his videos, Ricardo states: “And when I see a white woman with a black man, that’s completely unacceptable. The best target would be a rap show. Those kinds of people I’d love to exterminate.”

These statements reflect his deeply racist and violent mindset, which escalated over time. His obsession with Björk and his extreme reactions to her personal life culminated in the creation of a dangerous plan intended to harm her.

After his initial plan to create a bomb that would infect Björk with the HIV virus failed due to the inability to keep the virus alive until detonation, Ricardo López devised a new idea.

He constructed a letter bomb containing sulfuric acid, designed to explode upon opening and cause severe harm or disfigurement.

López sent this device to Björk’s residence in London. Fortunately, authorities intercepted the package before it could reach her, preventing any injury.

Later on, Ricardo López constructed a bomb disguised as a book, intending to send it falsely from Björk’s record label, Elektra Records. Upon opening the book, a mechanism would spray sulfuric acid onto her face.

The most disturbing aspect is that he assembles the bomb on video; it’s all recorded! He expresses hatred toward the singer and says that if she doesn’t die, at least she’ll be disfigured, revealing signs of pathological jealousy.

Ricardo discovered the singer’s address in London and sent the bomb by mail. After dispatching the package, he returned home and, in a moment of frenzy, shaved his head, smeared grease and red paint on his face, and wrote on a piece of paper, “The best of me.”

In his final moments, Ricardo appeared extremely euphoric and disturbed. The stalker then began making strange head movements and shouting; he then listened to Björk’s song “I Remember You.”

“Ok, I’m ready, but the manager is downstairs. That’s a problem. I’d like to say my last words: f*ck the world. F*ck Björk. And her black partner. The chances of me being successful, as I said before… I’m not counting on it.” says Ricardo.

He then explains that he wants to stain the paper with his bl**d, and as the music ends, Ricardo shoots himself. The bl**d did not stain the paper as planned. His body was found four days later, already decomposing.

The police encountered messages on the walls stating that the apartment contained documents and evidence of a crime that should be delivered to the FBI. The package was intercepted by the police before it reached the singer’s home.

They also found and collected several tapes, totaling 18 hours of recordings, many of which are available on the internet, in addition to more than 800 pages of diaries written by Ricardo.

Investigations concluded that the gun was rusty, and thus he did not die from the bullet reaching his brain, but from haemorrhage, agonizing as a result.

One can hear his reaction at the moment of the shot, and it doesn’t have the conventional sound of a gun.

Björk, upon learning about Ricardo’s unhealthy obsession and death, extended her condolences to his family and addressed the incident publicly only once, stating, “It’s terrible, very terrible. It’s a very sad thing that someone shoots himself in the face.”
