They all protected each other until the leak tape. @NNPA_BlackPress. We at AAPI Equity Alliance are horrified and angered by the anti-Black, anti-LGBTQ, and anti-indigenous statements made by and in the presence of Los Angeles City Councilmembers Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo, and Kevin de Leon and LA Federation of Labor director Ron Herrera.
SAG-AFTRA on Monday called for the resignation of three Los Angeles lawmakers and the president of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor after the committee chairman was videotaped using racist and homophobic language.
The Screen Actors Guild joined an angry chorus after the leak of an hour-long conversation on Sunday in which council president Nuri Martinez disparaged indigenous Mexicans and made racist remarks about a congressman’s three-year-old black son.
“Racism and homophobia have no place in the labor movement, government or society,” the Screen Actors Guild said in a statement. “All leaders must adhere to higher standards focused on anti-racism, and there is an immediate call for discrimination and hate speech.”
Martinez resigned as council chairman on Monday. But many leaders — including mayoral candidates Rick Caruso and Karen Bass — also urged her and council members Gil Zedillo and Kevin De Leon to give up their council seats.
The three lawmakers spoke on tape with Los Angeles County Fed President Ron Herrera about how best to benefit themselves and hurt their opponents in the redistributive process.
SAG-AFTRA, an affiliate of the Los Angeles County Fed, slammed Herrera’s statement for not “confronting and condemning” board members in real time.
“While City Council members are elected representatives serving the citizens of Los Angeles, the LACFL represents more than 800,000 county staff, many of whom are people of color and LGBTQIA+.
Racism expressed by council members and condoned by Herrera during the meeting And homophobia is inexcusable. It creates and fuels division and hostility within and among the Los Angeles community. There is no excuse for this breach of trust,” SAG-AFTRA said in a statement.
