On May 26, 2012, a 65-year-old homeless man named Ronald Poppo was savagely attacked by Rudy Eugene on the MacArthur Causeway in Miami. Two years later, both the name of the street and the story of its attack made national headlines.

As you may remember, Eugene reportedly stripped off his clothes and swung around a light post before biting into Poppo’s face in broad daylight. Since then, both had been part of his identity.

A Miami police officer shot and killed Eugene after being provoked by the drug “bath salts.” Poppo said Eugene told him he wasn’t going to die during the assault, which was interpreted as unusual behaviour. Many people believed that bath salts were to blame for the attack.

Medical examiners of Miami-Dade County released the results of their toxicology tests on Eugene. This revealed that he had marijuana in his body, without any evidence of other street drugs, alcohol or prescription medications. After being attacked by Poppo, Eugene suffered extensive damage to his face and eyes.

Where is Poppo currently located?

Miami TV station WFOR posted a report two weeks ago about Poppo being in long-term care after being injured in an attack. Poppo had multiple surgeries to repair the damage to his face caused by the attack.

The WFOR report states that the majority of Poppo’s treatment costs are covered by Medicaid. Additionally, $100,000 was set aside for him through a fund created by the community. He can stay at the medical facility indefinitely and no additional funds are needed for his care.

According to the Huffington Post, Poppo recently learned to shower, dress and feed himself. He no longer allows visitors other than doctors and nurses, who mostly spend time with him playing the guitar and listening to the radio. Since he began working with an occupational therapist, he’s gained 50 pounds.
